El Centro de Investigaciones Sociales del Caribe y América Latina, mejor conocido como CISCLA, fue fundado en 1961 en San Germán por el Dr. Irving Peter Pflaum.
Durante sus 39 años de existencia, CISCLA ha sido reconocido como un centro para el estudio de los aspectos sociales, económicos, políticos y culturales de los países del Caribe y América Latina. Desde su fundación, sus variadas actividades han sido auspiciadas por la Universidad Interamericana, por varias fundaciones del exterior, al igual que por los amigos del Centro.
El objetivo principal de la organización son el fomentar la comunicación y cooperación entre las comunidades del Caribe y América Latina. CISCLA cumple estos objetivos mediante el auspicio de simposios, seminarios y conferencias que son llevadas a cabo mediante encomiendas específicas de estudio para considerar aspectos problemáticos en las áreas políticas, culturales, sociales y económicas.
Un segundo objetivo de CISCLA es la diseminación de la información obtenida por el Centro, los investigadores asociados y otros materiales, a través de la serie Documentos de Trabajo y la carta CISCLA Informa/CISCLA Reports publicada anualmente en inglés y español (última edición-1995).
Un objetivo final es el estimular actividades relacionadas a las del Centro. Este objetivo ha resultado en varias publicaciones, así como sentar las bases para otras investigaciones y
conferencias.
Description
The Caribbean Institute and
Study Center for Latin America, better known as CISCLA, was founded in 1961 by
Irving Peter Pflaum at the San Germán Campus of Inter American University of
Puerto Rico.
During its 38 years of
existence, CISCLA has become a recognized center for the study of social,
economic, political, and cultural aspects of Caribbean and Latin American
countries. CISCLA’s varied and
widespread activities have been sponsored by IAU, with, at times, outside
support from various foundations, as well as friends of the Institute.
The basic objective of the
organization is to encourage greater communication and cooperation among
Caribbean and Latin American communities. CISCLA carries out this objective
by sponsoring conferences, panel discussions
and faculty seminars which consider problems of political, cultural, social,
and economic aspects of specific areas of the Caribbean Basin and Latin
America.
A second objective of CISCLA
is to disseminate information gathered by the Institute, associated scholars
and outside related material through the publication of monographs, the Working
Paper series (begun in 1982), and an annual newsletter (English/Spanish—last
issued in 1995).
A final objective of CISCLA is to stimulate
activities related to those of the Institute, which has led to various
publications and set the stage for future conferences.
